Amazing Places to Stay in Zambia's Luangwa Valley
Kafunta Safaris, owner/operator of Kafunta River Lodge and Island Bush Camp in Zambia's Luangwa National Park, recently announced a launch into the North American market. Both the lodge and the camp are in the Luangwa Valley, a relevantly unknown region of Zambia that lacks the crowds of tourists that often visit high-density game areas.

"Since Kafunta Lodge opened in 1997, we have remained on-site to personally manage the lodge and care for each individual guest," says Anke Cowan, director of Kafunta Safaris. Besides serving great food and providing outstanding local guides, Cowan emphasizes that the staff's commitment and attention to detail assure that guests have a memorable safari experience.
Kafunta's main lounge is built around a large mango tree and is thatched in the traditional style of the Kunda tribe. Panoramic views of the Luangwa River and South Luangwa National Park as well as a variety of native birds and game can be observed from the main lodge. The lodge also has a swimming pool and the only natural hot-spring tub in the Valley.
It takes about two hours to drive from Kafunta River Lodge to the Island Bush Camp. Smaller and more intimate than the lodge, the camp is situated under a grove of mahogany tress on the banks of the Luangwa River.
Both the lodge and camp are within the premier wildlife area of Luangwa National Park. More than 50 species of animals, some that can be found only in the Luangwa Valley, survive here, including the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson wildebeest.
Anke and Ron Cowan, who own and operate Kafunta Safaris, pride themselves on being one of Africa
Geographic’s Special Places (https://www.africageographic.com/expeditions/special-places/), a
small number of hand-picked establishments that provide extraordinary wildlife experiences.
