Food (and Drink) for Thought: Philadelphia and Vicinity Targets Foodies With Plenty of Goodies This Summer and Fall
 When foodies hit the road, they take their passion for farmers markets, culinary tours and tasting experiences with them. Whether it’s called culinary tourism or just plain fun, the chance to see, smell and taste the best of local gastronomy is a big attraction, and it’s getting bigger. The 2009 Travel and Tourism Market Research Handbook reports that 27 million Americans—or 17% of leisure travelers—made culinary and/or wine activities part of their trips within the past three years. These activities include everything from taking cooking classes and dining out in a unique setting to visiting farmers markets and attending food festivals.
Visitors to Philadelphia and vicinity can choose from a full plate of delectable options.
Here’s a look at some of the upcoming culinary happenings in and around Philadelphia:
* Fruit and veggie celebrations abound during growing season at Linvilla Orchards, a 300-acre farm dedicated to agriculture, entertainment and education in Delaware County. Tomatoes and pears are featured Aug. 22. The day-long festival includes pick-your-own activities, family games, hayrides, music and plenty of treats to sample. 137 W. * Celebrate "all-things mushroom" with more than 100,000 fellow fungus fans at the Mushroom Festival in Kennett Square. A weekend of tastings, cooking demonstrations, farm tours and crafts are on tap at the mushroom capital of the world; Sept. 12-13. 610-925-3373, mushroomfestival.org
* Looking ahead to the fall, apple lovers will be flocking to the Apple Festival at Peddler’s Village, a free two-day event Nov. 7-8 featuring a host of treats including fresh cider, dumplings and fritters plus a juried craft show, live entertainment and pie-eating contests.
