Georgia Colonial Coast Birding, Nature Festival Planned For October With Special Family Events

Now in its fourth year, Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding & Nature Festival will feature an exciting weekend of field trips, seminars and evening programs, October 13-15.

This year a Saturday training session for young birders who would like to learn more about coastal birds has been added to the schedule. The goal is to encourage and help young people who have a special interest in science, art and the outdoors.

The festival headquarters are on beautiful Jekyll Island, Georgia. This barrier island is midway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida and is connected to the mainland by a six-mile, marsh-hemmed causeway.

Southeast Georgia is a birder’s paradise, offering a wide variety of habitats and wildlife. Shorelines, salt marshes, old rice fields, woodlands, tidal rivers, freshwater wetlands and more all host their own fascinating bird communities.

Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding & Nature Festival provides a vast spectrum of opportunities for everyone from the casual nature enthusiast to the most experienced birder. Field trips to over twenty different natural areas, including barrier islands and informative seminars on a wide range of topics are the cornerstone of the festival.

The whole family will enjoy spending time in The Rookery; this large exhibition area will showcase a variety of different vendors, conservation groups, kids’ activities, arts and crafts - even a live raptor show!

Also on Friday afternoon the second annual Georgia Birds Conservation Summit will be hosted by Peter Stangel of the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation. Later that evening, celebrate the 75th anniversary of Georgia’s State Parks System with a social gathering and special presentation. The festivities continue on Saturday evening with a delectable "Jimmy" Buffet dinner banquet, followed by a keynote address from Massachusetts Important Bird Area Director, Wayne Petersen.

From pristine barrier island refuges to the mysterious Okefenokee Swamp; from Savannah, the hostess city of the south, to the Golden Isles; coastal Georgia has a little something for everyone and a whole lot of southern charm!
