A Hawaiian Gem That Won’t Break the Bank!
Hotel Accommodations on Maui can break the bank. However, the Plantation Inn will spare your wallet. Nestled in the center of Lahaina -- a historic whaling town, the inn offers the charm and solitude of an old southern plantation. Only a mere two blocks from the ocean, the turn-of-the-century style inn has nineteen uniquely appointed rooms. Each room includes a private bath, antique furnishings, hardwood floors, stained glass and brass or canopy beds. Most of the sound-proof rooms have a private Lanai, some of which overlook the inviting tiled pool and Jacuzzi. Personalized service with a touch of Hawaiian culture make this intimate inn a tropical gem.
The surprisingly quiet retreat is only steps away from bustling Front Street, which is Maui’s main shopping hub. Restaurants, bars, surf-style shops, galleries and historic sites line each side of the street. A mix of locals and tourists gather here nightly to view unsurpassable sunsets.
The inn’s sister property is the Ka’anapali Beach Resort, which is located three miles away and on the beach. Guests of the inn are invited to use the resort’s pool and beach. Black Rock is off the beach, which is one of the top snorkeling spots on Maui.
No trip to Maui is complete without a drive on the road to Hana. Not only is it one of the most spectacular drives in America, but it’s free. Take an entire day to explore the lush, snake-turn Hana Highway. Along the 52-mile route, you will come across Waikamoi Ridge, a trail with an abundance of tropical flowers; Puohokamoa Falls, an easily accessible waterfall; Keanae Arboretum; the dramatic black-lava shore of the Keanae Peninsula; the 400-foot Waimoku Falls in Oheo Gulch. Last but not least, Charles Lindbergh’s grave is located in a hard-to-find spot, but if you look hard enough, you’ll discover the hidden lane, which will lead you to the rustic, one-room Kipahula church. (Near riding stables)
For another day’s excursion, explore the Kula Highway. Along every curve, mountain pastures dotted with cows give way to ocean vistas. The 1,500 foot-high pasturelands are home to cattle ranchers. From central Maui, take the Hana Highway, the Haleakala Highway (Route 37) toward Keokea.
